Abstract

The integration of renewable energy sources into global power systems has accelerated dramatically, driven by climate change mitigation goals and technological advancements. However, the inherent variability and intermittency of renewable energy sources present significant challenges for grid stability and energy security. Energy storage technologies have emerged as critical enablers for renewable energy deployment, providing solutions for load balancing, grid stabilization, and energy time-shifting. This comprehensive review examines the current state of renewable energy storage solutions, recent technological advances, economic considerations, and future research directions. The analysis covers battery technologies, mechanical storage systems, thermal storage, hydrogen-based solutions, and emerging technologies, highlighting their respective advantages, limitations, and potential applications in renewable energy integration.
