Economic Insecurity and the Prolongation of Courtship: A Qualitative Study of Young Couples in Urban Ghana
Abstract
In this study, the researcher examined the role of economic insecurity in extending courtship of young couples in urban Ghana. Although marriage is one of the most cherished achievements that cultures have upheld, young adults are delaying formalisation of their relationships more given the increasing financial strain. The study based its study using the qualitative research design collected firsthand information through a series of in-depth interviews with the purposely selected respondents residing in Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi. The results indicate that a structural and relational factor determines a long courtship. Financial instability, high cost of living and the financial needs of both conventional and contemporary marriage rituals became key deterrents to marriage preparedness. The research findings conclude that not getting married timely is not only an individual decision but also a symptom of the social-economic factors and the developing cultural demands. It points out that supportive policies, financial empowerment programs, and more flexible marriage practices which are in line with realities of the young couples in present day Ghana are necessary.
