Combating Insurgency: Adult Mass Literacy as Catalysts in Northern Nigeria
Abstract
Illiteracy is one of the greatest challenges to individual’s critical thinking for making a rational decision. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised of Boko-Haram insurgents. The sample size of the study was Ninety five (95) respondents selected, through a snowball sampling techniq. Two research questions were raised. Data were obtained, through a self-developed researchinstruments, entitled ‘’ Questionnaire on combating Insurgency Adult Mass Literacy as catalyst in Northern Nigeria’’ (CIMALCNN’’), fashioned on four liker rating scale, strongly Agreed (SA) Agreed (A) Disagreed (D), and Strongly Disagreed. It was rated on 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively. The researcher instruments were validated by two experts in Measurement and Evaluation. Its reliability was determined, using test –retest method at two weeks interval and 70,1 coefficient reliability was established. Data were analyzed, using Descriptive Statistics (Simple percentages, frequency counts and Mean). Based on the findings conclusions were made that, through Mass Adult Literacy (MAL) people could acquire skills, thus enhance their employability chances in the labour market. Besides, MAL could also reduce recruitment of people to join Boko Haram insurgency in Northern, Nigeria Based on the conclusions recommendations were made that, government should create more of centers of Adult Mass Literacy programme for easy accessibility to the programme. In additions government should provide adequate resources for sustainability of the programme, and so on.
